In March, the Get Fit Selma! Planning Committee made the decision to cancel its 8th Annual Health & Wellness Festival due to COVID-19. However, lead medical professionals, Cassandra Ford,  PhD, MSN, MBA, RN, and Janice Parker, CRNP, MS, DNP-BC, have created a webinar series to be presented August 29, September 12 and September 19,, 2020 with the goal of providing virtual support to the public concerning coronavirus and health and wellness during this pandemic. The webinars are free but Get Fit Selma! asks everyone to register at  https://mglcselma.com/gfs-2020/ so that they can track the number of views.

The three webinars have garnered the support of local health care professionals as well as those who provide demonstrations at Get Fit Selma! They will be live on the dates below and then will be available to the public on YouTube. Each Webinar deals with specific subject matter.

David McCormack, MBA, CEO Vaughan Regional Medical Center and Justine Maxwell, DrPH, MPH, Epidemiology, Tennessee Department of Health, will partner on a webinar this Saturday, produced by Get Fit Selma! 2020, with the support of the Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation, Inc. and sponsored by Sarrell Dental & Eye and DentaQuest Corporation.  They will speak to the challenges faced by rural healthcare in a pandemic and answer questions about what individuals can do to protect their own health and that of their families.

David McCormack has made his name among healthcare providers in Selma and Dallas County as an advocate for access to healthcare. He has been the CEO of Vaughan Regional Medical Center since 2016 and lauds the medical professionals at Vaughan for their self-sacrifice and service.

McCormack sees challenges as opportunities; articulates clear vision; and secures buy-­in for strategic plans from key stakeholders throughout the organization. He is a high-­energy, hands-­on leader known for making rounds throughout the hospital to solve issues in real-­time and establish relationships from the ER to the C-­suite. McCormack received his BA in Accounting at Auburn University and his MBA at Florida Atlantic University in Accounting and Business Management.

Dr. Maxwell is from Selma, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Leroy Maxwell. She is an epidemiologist by training and serves as an Informatician with the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) Office of Informatics and Analytics. In this role, she leads the strategic public health reporting and informatics unit supporting department-wide public health information system interoperability, cross-cutting informatics projects, and Tennessee’s drug overdose reporting program.  Prior to this position, Dr. Maxwell served as an Epidemiologist within TDH’s Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness division.

 Dr. Maxwell holds a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology from Emory University, a Master of Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Technology from George Washington University, and a Doctor of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Kentucky. She is currently a PhD student in Health Informatics, Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Diabetes Support Group Meeting

The September Diabetes Support Group meeting will meet on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. at Trustmark Bank Community Room, Selma, Alabama. “Common Tips to Boost Your Immune System” will be the topic for this month’s meeting and we will discuss what makes up your immune system and common ways to help you stay healthy.We will also share diabetic friendly recipes.

Everyone is required to wear a facial covering/mask and practice social distancing. For more information contact the Dallas County Extension office at 334-875-3200. The program is FREE and open to the public – “Everyone is Welcome”.
