Recreation & Climate

The Selma and Dallas County area has a great climate for business as well as pleasure. Rarely will the weather disrupt your work or play. In this part of the Sunbelt, the temperature is moderate and comfortable year-round. January temperatures average 50.9F, July temperatures average 81.8F. Average annual rainfall is under 50 inches and the growing season is 253 days (golfing season is even longer!)

hist03.gifWith the Alabama and Cahaba rivers, boating, fishing and camping are popular sports. There are an abundance of parks, tennis courts, swimming pools and golf courses, making it possible for everyone to have fun and enjoy this community. If you enjoy the beach, Gulf beaches are a short three-hour drive away.

Dallas County is also known for some of the South’s finest preserves for deer, quail, and turkey hunting.

History & Artsstrdvnt1.gif

The Selma and Dallas County area is a place of great charm, beauty and history. Just as patches of fabric in a hodgepodge of color can be transformed into a beautiful quilt, so the Selma of today displays a radiant and diverse personality. Its many festivals celebrate Selma's history from Civil War to Civil Rights. Its vintage architecture is a stunning composition of antebellum and Victorian homes and shops, comprising the largest historic district in Alabama.

olddepot.gifHistory is on display as well, at the Old Depot Museum, National Voting Rights Museum & Institute, Old Town Historic District and at Sturdivant Hall, an elegantly restored antebellum mansion whose interior and grounds are open for tours. The restoration of the St. James Hotel was completed in November of 1997.hist05.gif Built in 1837, the St. James is among the oldest functioning hotels in Alabama and one of the few remaining Antebellum Riverfront hotels in the United States.

The performing arts thrive also, producing a full calendar of events in community theater, children's theater, choral presentations, community concerts and performances and lectures at Selma's three colleges. Selma also hosts the re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Selma and the Bridge Crossing Jubilee annually. Thirty miles from Selma is the Lowndes County Interpretive Center offering a state-of-the-art history of the Civil Rights Movement. Just 45 minutes away, in Montgomery, is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and acclaimed arts complex presenting exhibits and performances year-round.
